Human Rights Watch stated on Friday that the Tanzanian government has failed to implement adequate legal and policy measures to protect the educational rights of pregnant girls and adolescent mothers. The organization highlighted that despite international commitments to uphold the right to education, many young women in Tanzania face significant barriers that prevent them from continuing their studies.
The report noted that discriminatory practices and societal stigma often lead to the exclusion of pregnant girls from educational institutions. In many cases, these young mothers are forced to drop out of school, which severely limits their future opportunities and perpetuates cycles of poverty. The lack of supportive policies and resources for reintegrating these students into the educational system was also emphasized.
Human Rights Watch called on the Tanzanian government to take immediate action to ensure that pregnant girls and adolescent mothers can access education without discrimination. The organization urged policymakers to create a more inclusive environment that respects and protects the rights of all students, regardless of their circumstances.
