Recent studies reveal that the ongoing criticisms of higher education by former President Donald Trump reflect a long-standing conservative effort to separate the concepts of "equality" and "quality" within academic institutions. Co-authored by SESP Professor Quinn Mulroy and Heather McCambly, a SESP alumna, the research introduces the term “(e)quality politics.” This term encapsulates the way politicians have historically navigated the complex relationship between educational equity and institutional excellence.
The studies highlight a pattern of political rhetoric that seeks to undermine Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in academia. By framing these initiatives as detrimental to academic standards, critics have aimed to reshape public perception of higher education. The authors argue that this narrative not only influences policy but also affects the broader societal understanding of what constitutes a fair and effective educational system. As debates around DEI continue to evolve, the insights from this research offer a critical lens through which to examine the implications of these political strategies on the future of higher education.
